Whilst previously Ancar B Technologies had standardised on the GFI Mail Essentials solution, a solution that is recognised as the industry leader in SPAM prevention, recent developments with increasing SPAM has led to us investing proactively in a new form of protection to combat the threat.

 Well the nature of the SPAM threat has changed on two levels:-

1.       The rise of image based SPAM – spammers (the programmers who write SPAM) have turned to an innovative new strategy to by-pass traditional filters by sending emails that contain images of messages rather than the ANSI text of the message itself. Images are a lot more difficult for current SPAM software to filter compared to text and therefore the anti-spam solutions currently in place are by-passed. Indeed, a well known business security software specialist recently reported that image SPAM now accounts for around 40% of all SPAM by volume, compared to just 18% at the start of the 2007. 

2.       The growth of SPAM - spammers automated creation processes are getting faster and more intelligent. It has been estimated that the tools currently used can generate random images at the rate of a million per hour, with each message that is delivered having been sufficiently altered in real time to evade filters.   

The solution is pretty clear cut. The way forward is to block SPAM at the perimeter, outside your firewall at the ISP level, so that it never reaches your network in the first place and never has to be archived.

Ancar B Technologies has introduced a solution to do just this called Mail Foundry. Mail Foundry provides a centrally managed service at the ISP level, which filters all email for SPAM and virus threats.

Mail Foundry is extremely robust and easy to use. Customers are notified of any suspicious emails and then requested to log on to an interface to view their content. If the email is legitimate it can be downloaded to their Inbox. If it is SPAM, it will remain outside your network. And there is little cause for concern about the system filtering out legitimate emails. The system operates in such a way that there is only a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of a legitimate email being filtered and even then you will be notified of its existence!

We will levy a one off set up fee of £175 ex VAT and then an annual charge of £95 per year ex VAT. We recognise this is unexpected cost for those of you who may already be using GFI Mail Essentials. But unfortunately the nature of the SPAM threat has changed significantly, catching out many of the industry’s business security specialists.
